Jill Scott's mom Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on 4 April 1972, in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Scott was raised an only daughter of her grandmother. Scott attended The Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduation, she attended Temple University. Scott studied secondary school education while also working at two different jobs. She planned to become a high school English teacher. The dream of becoming an English teacher at high school ended when she dropped out of high school. The path she took to her career started as a spoken-word artist who performed her work live at poetry readings. Her next collaboration was to Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. They wrote You Got Me together. She came out during an Roots performance. Then, she began working with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. She was also able to experience the arts of performing during the tour that Broadway's musical Rent. She was also the first signed by Hidden Beach Recordings.
